Oak Flats Bowling & Recreation Club and the Illawarra Yacht Club are proud to announce Lake Heights Public School as their most recent Club Grants partner in sustainability. This partnership will see the Club donating $4,000 to Lake Heights Public School to fund sustainability projects aimed at involving and educating students in environmental practises.

Matt OHara, CEO of the Club explained that the funding is donated as part of the Club Grants scheme however ‘our Board has committed to donate an additional 30% each year above and beyond the requirements’ he said. ‘The extra donations go towards supporting local communities and commendable initiatives; it’s another example of the Illawarra Yacht Club and the Oak Flats Bowling & Recreation ClubDear Members, being genuine community clubs with genuine community values’.

Club Chairman Kevin Grainger is proud of the fact that following the amalgamation the Board are able to take their first steps into the Warrawong community. ‘We hope to communicate and share our values with the lakeside communities and create lasting partnerships which promote and support these values.’

Lake Heights Public School is no amateur when it comes to teaching its’ students about the environment with permaculture gardens already in place and a Sustainability Committee coordinated by teacher Jacqueline Stehr.

The Club’s funding will transform the humble veggie patch into an interactive living classroom. School Principal Peter Heddles envisages students will be able to be involved in the food process from seedling to stomach. ‘It will be an environment where organic food is grown, cared for, harvested, cooked and consumed by students’ he said. The Club’s Marketing and Community Relations Coordinator Mandy Humphries is pleased to see the school and the Club sharing the same sustainability ideals. ‘We both collect rainwater to use in our gardens and use our waste to make compost which builds soil fertility and sustains garden productivity’ she said.

The Club is proud to share its values in caring for the environment and living sustainably and looks forward to the Lake Heights Public School community and Club community coming together to share and learn new skills.
